About Bachelor of Indonesian

The language minor in Indonesian offers three basic modules which convey to students skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) is the national language of the Republic of Indonesia and one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Linguistically, Bahasa Indonesia is the Malay language, which is also the national language of Malaysia and Brunei. Indonesian i.e. Malay, is by far the most important language of Southeast Asia. Students generally have no previous knowledge of the language when they begin their studies. As a result, this minor features an introduction to grammar and daily communication. As they progress, students are prepared for academic readings, which are necessary to understand intellectual life in Indonesia. The minor in Indonesian can be combined with a major in Asian Studies as follows: with the profile Southeast Asian Studies (in this profile Vietnamese can be an alternative to Indonesian) and with the profile Comparative Religious Studies (in this case Indonesian would be an elective from among the languages offered by the Institute for Oriental and Asian Studies). In the first three semesters students acquire, through the basic modules, fundamental knowledge of grammar and communication skills. This subject must be combined with a second subject. Possible lines of work: Intercultural communication, intercultural management, international development cooperation, peace and conflict research, international educational work (adult education, language courses, etc.), politics (policy consulting), culture (conservation/maintenance/management of global cultural heritage, cultural institutions, culture management, museums, etc.), tourism (long-distance, educational and cultural tourism), journalism, academia (teaching/research at universities, research institutions, etc.) Job options strongly depend on a graduates chosen major.
