    About Bachelor of Meteorology and Geophysics

    Meteorology is a largely physically and chemically oriented natural science that deals with the state, composition and the movement of the atmosphere. The classic objective of meteorology is to understand and predict the weather. State-of-the-art equipment with radar and laser technology, but also satellites and radiosondes support the observation of atmospheric processes and provide a multitude of monitoring data. Once processed with statistical methods, the data are used in mathematical-physical models to generate forecasts. The results of these models are interpreted by weather forecast professionals using downstream statistical models. Another classic subarea of meteorology looks to model past and future developments of the earth system with its important processes of exchange between relevant spheres (atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere, biosphere and soil). This discipline is called climatology. At the beginning of the degree program students undergo thorough basic training in physics, mathematics and electronic data processing. Building on that, students then specialize in subfields of meteorology. The skills learned in this degree program—observation, analysis, model construction, operation and evaluation—are essential for many professions in the modern labor market. Possible lines of work: Civil service (Deutscher Wetterdienst/German Weather Service), environmental protection/water authorities/waterborne transportation authorities, public-sector or private media (radio, television, online), providing expert opinion (insurers, environmental/ecological associations, consulting firms), development of processes, software, products, collection/analysis of technical data (e.g. inspection associations), academia (teaching/research at universities, research institutions, etc.), expert opinions and distribution in the area of renewable energies (solar and wind power), energy exchange
