About Master of Asian Studies

A strong emphasis on its research focus lies at the heart of the Asian Studies degree program. Students develop critical and reflective as well as practical skills in a chosen specialty from Oriental and Asian studies. This particularly includes dealing with sources in the original language. Besides acquiring scientific expert knowledge aligned with current international standards, students are enabled to practically apply, critically evaluate and creatively develop their skills on their own account. The Department of Oriental and Asian Studies offers the following specializations: Arabic Studies and Translation, Chinese Language and Translation, Islamic Archaeology, Islamic Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies, Asian and Oriental Art History, Mongolian Studies, Religious Studies, Chinese Studies, South Asian Studies, Southeast Asian Studies, Tibetan Studies, Turkish History and Society as well as Economics and Society in Asia. Students can follow up on this specialized training in postgraduate and doctoral programs. In addition to the modules relevant for their specialization, students can individually add courses from the range of elective modules offered at the Department to refine their curriculum. Possible lines of work: Intercultural communication, intercultural management, international development cooperation, peace and conflict research, international educational work (adult education, language courses, etc.), politics (policy consulting), culture (conservation/maintenance/management of global cultural heritage, cultural institutions, culture management, museums, etc.) tourism (long-distance, educational and cultural tourism), journalism, academia (teaching/research at universities, research institutions, etc.)
