About Master of Medieval Studies

The master's degree program Medieval Studies is built on the insight that knowledge of the Middle Ages is fundamental to a deeper understanding of more modern developments, especially in the humanities. Thus, the study of medieval history and culture, medieval languages and literatures, is not merely to discover the various facets of a bygone era; Medieval Studies must be understood as the study of an epoch that was key to laying the foundation of the modern world. By integrating this interdisciplinary degree program into the research activities of the Bonner Mittelalterzentrums/BMZ (Bonn Middle Ages Center), students are assured of a study program that will be research-based. The goal of supporting students own research is also served by tying this degree program into the Greek and Latin Philology module, which assures that students will be thoroughly exposed to the central language of medieval culture. In this manner, students acquire the ability to critically examine the state of research and continue to work on academic questions within the medieval studies framework. In addition, students learn key, employment-relevant competencies such as the ability to independently formulate and solve research problems. Possible lines of work: Archiving, publishing, libraries, media (newspapers, trade/professional journals, publishing houses, radio, television, etc.), public relations/press work, teaching at schools, adult education, tourism, museums/cultural institutions, policy consulting, foreign service, academia (teaching/research at universities, research institutions, etc.)
