    Why study Clinical Education at Keele University?

    Course summary

    This course will introduce you to the latest theoretical base and expose you to the challenges of teaching students in the clinical environment. The overall aim of the course is to improve the quality and effectiveness of clinical teaching. Participants will develop expertise and specialist knowledge in their chosen areas of clinical education.

    The course is divided into three levels: Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and full MSc. Students can step off at any level. Students who successfully complete the 60 credit Certificate course are able to opt to proceed to a Diploma which is a further 60 credits, in total amounting to 120 credits. A student attaining the Diploma can then progress to a MSc (180 credits in total).

    This course will cover the fundamentals of clinical education, introduce you to the latest theoretical base and expose you to the challenges of teaching and assessing students in the clinical environment. The overall aim of the course is to improve the quality and effectiveness of clinical teaching through:

    • Understanding a learner-centred approach
    • Developing practical teaching and assessment skills
    • Promoting understanding of educational theory
    • Promoting reflective practice in education and clinical practice
    • Promoting evidence based education
    Postgraduate Diploma

    Building upon the foundations of the certificate course, the diploma explores more specialised aspects of clinical education. You are able to select modules which reflect your own areas of interest or expertise. It will introduce you to the latest theoretical base and expose you to the challenges of teaching students in the clinical environment. The overall aim of the course is to improve the quality and effectiveness of clinical teaching. Participants will develop expertise and specialist knowledge in their chosen areas of clinical education.

    MSc

    Open to Home (UK) students part time, as a face-to-face OR distance learning course OR a hybrid combination.

    Open to International students part time, as a distance learning (online) course only.

    Achieving the MSc will develop your knowledge and necessary skills to ensure professionalism is reached and maintained for clinical leaders. It will provide the individual with advanced expertise and specialist knowledge in clinical education and enable you to display critical analysis and independent thinking, to progress you in clinical education teaching. To complete the masters, you undertake a clinical education-based research project.
    The total academic credit rating for the MSc degree is 180 credits, of which the taught modules comprise 120 credits and the dissertation 60 credits.

    On successful completion of your Dissertation, you should be able to:

    • Communicate a framework of reference (such as a literature review), to show the relevance of the proposed research.
    • Display evidence of critical analysis, independence of thought and an understanding of advanced concepts and methods related to research.
    • Demonstrate the appropriateness and intellectual coherence of the research design/plan of argument for linking questions to methods and conclusions.
    • Select appropriate information gathering methods and implement these effectively and with a high level of judgement.
    • Show evidence of advanced methods of analysis and of a high level of skill in their execution.
    • Where appropriate, evidence of critical evaluation and reassessment of results and techniques during the research period.
    • Show evidence of intellectual rigour in the interpretation of the results of the analysis.
    • Analyse ethical issues (where appropriate).
    • Produce a report of appropriate style, organization and structure.
    • Display a high level of written English and expository methods.

    Key dates

    • The next taught PG Certificate course starts 13 September 2024 with an application deadline of 30 August 2024.

      Please note: The face-to-face teaching days to which attendance is mandatory are: 13 September, 21 October, 4 November 2024, 21 and 26 January 2025, 7 March plus one further date in March 2025 TBC

    • The next distance learning course starts on 7 October 2024 with an application deadline of 29 September 2024.

    Teaching facilities

    The course is hosted by Keele University's School of Medicine, which is one of the top ranked universities in the UK. You will have access to university libraries (online facilities for distance learning) facilities and enjoy the support of the wider university. Teaching Faculty include specialist clinical educators along with educationally qualified clinicians working in both Primary and Secondary care who ensure the course is relevant to the clinical environment.

    Postgraduate research entry requirements

    Before submitting an application to undertake a research degree at Keele, you are advised to contact the relevant Research Office. This will allow you to discuss your research proposal, available supervision and the entry requirements of the research degree.

    Before applying for a PhD, MPhil, DM or Professional Doctorate:

    You are advised to contact the relevant administrator listed on the course website. Our dedicated postgraduate support staff can provide information on course-specific entry requirements. For PhD, MPhil and DM applicants, they can also provide information on potential supervisors you need to consider before applying.

    Qualifications

    • PhD, MPhil and DMs usually require an Honours degree with a first or 2.1 classifications, or the equivalent if you have been educated outside the UK (See here for international equivalent guidelines - found here >). Any other academic and/or professional qualifications you may have are also considered, and in some cases form an integral part of the entrance requirement.
    • Professional Doctorates usually require a Masters Degree, or the equivalent if you have been educated outside the UK (See here for international equivalent guidelines - found here >); and hold that qualification normally in the general field you are applying within, or it's equivalent in professional experience and a professionally accredited programme. Applicants without a Masters degree will be considered on a case-by-case basis, where they can provide evidence of relevant professional experience or other experiential prior learning.

    Entry on to many degrees is highly competitive; consequently, we also consider industrial experience as well as the skills, attributes, motivation and potential for success of an individual when deciding whether to make an offer.

    English Program Requirements

    In addition to academic qualifications, you may be required to produce evidence of your English language ability. This is because in order to benefit from your studies, you need to demonstrate that you have a good level of written and spoken English before taking up a place here.

    English language requirements: IELTS

    For PGR students joining us from August 2024 onwards, for all subject areas, we require IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any subtest.

    If you do not have current documentation of the required level of English language you must either retake your language test (IELTS) or attend and successfully complete a pre-sessional (summer) English course before the start of your postgraduate studies.

    Keele University runs 11 and 6 week pre-sessional Academic English courses online and face to face.

    If you require a Visa to study at Keele and undertake a Pre-Sessional English course, you may be eligible for a Visa to cover both the pre-sessional (11 or 6 week only) and Degree course, on the basis of you achieving the required language competencies by the end of the pre-sessional course, but will be withdrawn if you fail to satisfactory progress to the equivalent level of English required.     On completion of the PG Certificate, you will be able to teach in a range of clinical settings, with a broad range of expertise and sector specific knowledge attained.

    You may choose to extend your skills and depth of knowledge by progressing to a diploma or master's. This will provide you with the ability to communicate and analyse proposed research, and provide professional judgement at a higher level for critical evaluation and assessment to enable you to progress in your career in clinical education across the healthcare sector.
