    About

    In modern engineering there are no distinct boundaries between specialisms, and all engineers require a broad-based knowledge of the fundamental principles to be able to work across multidisciplinary teams. At their core, an engineer is a creative and technically minded individual who can conceive ideas, design and implement them. They are pioneers and problem solvers, innovators and analysers. The five-year MEng Engineering (Study Abroad) is an excellent choice for those who want to experience engineering in its broader sense before choosing a specialism in Year 2.

    What to expect

    We introduce you to many of the key features of engineering, equipping you with a well-rounded understanding and skill set in areas such as design, programming, mechanics, electronic systems and instrumentation, manufacturing and material science. You’ll share the first year with all our School of Engineering students, regardless of their specialism, and you will gain an appreciation for the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. Not only that, you will already know other engineering students before you move into your specialism in Year 2.

    Get ready to use teamwork, creativity and technical skills to design and build things that solve real-world problems. You’ll do it all in state-of-the-art facilities. We have two dedicated engineering buildings, which are brand new with lots of cool kit, maker spaces, labs and social spaces.

    Take further steps towards professional engineering with management skills, project management, and industry engagement. Sustainability, safety, ethics and quality management are kept in focus too.

    Choosing your specialism

    Your 2nd and 4th years will include the study of a range of modules and group project work where you apply your skills and knowledge to real industry problems.

    Master’s-level training

    In your final year of study, you will gain a strong understanding of real-world engineering and hands-on experience in the profession through an industry-linked project, further building your confidence and preparing you for the workforce. You will also complete a comprehensive individual research project alongside specialist technical modules, allowing you to explore your interests and align them with your future career goals. This year will solidify your knowledge, placing you in an excellent position to launch your engineering career and progress toward achieving Chartered Engineer status.

    Personal development

    Whichever specialism you choose, you will develop valuable transferable skills that make you highly desirable to future employers. This includes working in collaboration, communication, and the ability to design and implement a system or device. You will grow practical skills in diagnosis and testing, system maintenance, digital proficiencies, and the ability to consider and maintain work safety practices in a range of environments.

    3 things our engineering students would like you to know:

    • The University is highly regarded for design in research and encourages us to do things differently, so we’re designing and innovating as we learn
    • All of us engineers share the same newly-built facilities. You’ll find us designing circuits in B02, using integrated software in the computer labs, or putting the mechanical workshops to good use
    • The first year is brilliant for future careers. It’s really beneficial for electronic and electrical engineers to understand heat transfer, or for chemical engineers to understand stress analysis, for example

    Will my course be four or five years?

    Students beginning this course in 2025 will study for four years. Students beginning in 2026 will study a revised five-year course.

    As a BA Economics, Politics and International Relations (Industry) graduate, you will be prepared for a career in public policy, international organisations, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). You will explore the complex connections between political sciences and economics, emphasising critical thinking, analytical skills, and a deep understanding of global issues. Our students receive comprehensive training that allows them to work with professionals of any level of economic training.

    Entry requirements

    These are the typical grades that you will need to study this course. This section will tell you whether you need qualifications in specific subjects, what our English language requirements are, and if there are any extra requirements such as attending an interview or submitting a portfolio.

    Qualifications and typical requirements accordion

    AAA. This should include Mathematics and a physical science subject, for example, Physics, Chemistry, Electronics, Design & Technology or Further Mathematics.

    Considered on a case-by-case basis. Our typical entry requirement would be 45 Level 3 credits at Distinction, but you would need to meet the subject requirements.

    We accept the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales in place of one A level, or equivalent qualification, as long as any subject requirements are met.

    Pre-2016 specifications: DDD in an Engineering related subject to include Distinctions in Mathematics for Engineering Technicians and Further Mathematics for Engineering Technicians units.

    2016 specifications: DDD in an Engineering related subject to include Distinctions in the following units: Unit 1 Engineering Principles, Unit 7 Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems. Unit 8 Further Engineering Mathematics is highly recommended.

    Our typical requirement would be A level grade A plus BTEC(s) at DD, or A levels at grade AA plus BTEC at D. This should include sufficient content in Mathematics and a physical science.

    36 points overall with 16 points from the best 3 HL subjects including either:

    1. Mathematics HL grade 6 (either pathway) plus grad 6 in a HL Physical Science

    2. Mathematics HL grade 6 (either pathway) plus grade 6 in two SL Physical Sciences

    3. Mathematics SL grade 7 (analysis and approaches) plus grade 6 in a HL Physical Science

    Acceptable physical science subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Design Technology.

    We are happy to admit applicants on the basis of five Highers, but where we require a specific subject at A level, we will typically require an Advanced Higher in that subject. If you do not meet the grade requirement through Highers alone, we will consider a combination of Highers and Advanced Highers in separate subjects.     Only accepted alongside A level Mathematics grade B. The following subjects accepted at Distinction overall, alongside A level Mathematics grade B: Design and development for engineering manufacturing; Engineering, manufacturing, processing and control; Maintenance, installation and repair for engineering and manufacturing. The following subjects considered on a case by case basis, alongside A level Mathematics grade B: Design, surveying and planning for construction; Building services engineering for construction; Onsite construction.

    Our general engineering first year allows you to get a taste of all of the disciplines within engineering if you are uncertain which path you wish to pursue. But regardless of whether you choose to progress onto mechanical or chemical engineering, or you find your passion lies within nuclear or electronic engineering, the interdisciplinary nature of our courses means that you will be in high demand across a huge range of sectors, such as energy, rail, manufacturing, and much more. Some have even gone on to pursue further study and embark on a career within academia, working at the forefront of scientific research and discovery. The highly-transferable skills you will acquire will make you a desirable employee in many fields – even those beyond traditional engineering career destinations. Graduates with our engineering degrees are well-paid too, with a median salary of £32,000 15 months after graduation (HESA Graduate Outcomes Survey 2024).

    Additional costs for this course

    It will be necessary for students to purchase clothing for use in laboratories which is approximately £30. The University pays for student membership of the Institute of Engineering and Technology where appropriate plus contributes to specialist software and workshop materials.

    There may be extra costs related to your course for items such as books, stationery, printing, photocopying, binding and general subsistence on trips and visits. Following graduation, you may need to pay a subscription to a professional body for some chosen careers.

    College fees

    Lancaster is proud to be one of only a handful of UK universities to have a collegiate system. Every student belongs to a college, and all students pay a small college membership fee which supports the running of college events and activities. Students on some distance-learning courses are not liable to pay a college fee.

    For students starting in 2025, the fee is £40 for undergraduates and research students and £15 for students on one-year courses.

    Computer equipment and internet access

    To support your studies, you will also require access to a computer, along with reliable internet access. You will be able to access a range of software and services from a Windows, Mac, Chromebook or Linux device. For certain degree programmes, you may need a specific device, or we may provide you with a laptop and appropriate software - details of which will be available on relevant programme pages. A dedicated IT support helpdesk is available in the event of any problems.

    The University provides limited financial support to assist students who do not have the required IT equipment or broadband support in place.

    Study abroad courses

    In addition to travel and accommodation costs, while you are studying abroad, you will need to have a passport and, depending on the country, there may be other costs such as travel documents (e.g. VISA or work permit) and any tests and vaccines that are required at the time of travel. Some countries may require proof of funds.

    Placement and industry year courses

    In addition to possible commuting costs during your placement, you may need to buy clothing that is suitable for your workplace and you may have accommodation costs. Depending on the employer and your job, you may have other costs such as copies of personal documents required by your employer for example.

    The fee that you pay will depend on whether you are considered to be a home or international student. Read more about how we assign your fee status.

    Home fees are subject to annual review, and may be liable to rise each year in line with UK government policy. International fees (including EU) are reviewed annually and are not fixed for the duration of your studies. Read more about fees in subsequent years.

    We will charge tuition fees to Home undergraduate students on full-year study abroad/work placements in line with the maximum amounts permitted by the Department for Education. The current maximum levels are:

    • Students studying abroad for a year: 15% of the standard tuition fee
    • Students taking a work placement for a year: 20% of the standard tuition fee

    International students on full-year study abroad/work placements will also be charged in line with the maximum amounts permitted by the Department for Education. The current maximum levels are:

    • Students studying abroad for a year: 15% of the standard international tuition fee during the Study Abroad year
    • Students taking a work placement for a year: 20% of the standard international tuition fee during the Placement year
