The online module provides an overview of social science perspectives on the relationships and interactions between social determinants of health at a global level and the ‘local’ community experiences of health and illness and the implications for policy and practice.
The interaction between the local and the global context of health is complex due to diverse socio-economic, cultural and political contexts. This module will give you different perspectives on the social determinants of health at the global and ‘local’, community levels within the context of the ‘global’ language of the right to health. The module will include exploration of how local contexts influence individual experiences of health and illness and the implications of this for global health practice. You will develop an understanding of ‘culture’ in health and the application of equality and diversity frameworks in a wide range of global health settings. The module will use a range of learning approaches including the virtual and physical classroom, flipped and peer learning, problem-based and experiential group work recorded lectures, case studies, research papers and threaded discussion boards. These interactive tools, including research papers, case studies and videos will be used throughout the course to provide you with continuous formative feedback on the application of social science concepts and human rights in understanding global health issues. You will benefit from the global health research and teaching expertise within LSTM. Your learning is supported by a range of online teaching methods that include directed and self-redirected learning, group work, case studies and threaded discussion boards.
