    About PhD in English

The RHUL English Department has an international reputation for advanced research. We have an excellent record of PhD completion and a thriving postgraduate community. Currently we have around 50 PhD students researching topics across the full range of English literary studies, Creative Writing, and Poetic Practice. Royal Holloway has excellent research facilities, including electronic resources and the largest library in the University of London. The English Department supports a significant body of postgraduate students developing Practice-based PhDs, in which a component part of the research involves producing a body of creative work. We currently have students developing novels, poetry collections, plays and creative work involving experimental poetic practices across disciplines and through a wide range of media. This creative component is coupled with the submission of a written critical component. The relationship between the creative and critical work varies depending on the specific project, but can involve writing a critical reflection on the creative work and process of generating it; critically engaging with the work of related writers or artists; forwarding practical and/or theoretical lines of inquiry initiated by the creative practice, and so forth. The Department welcomes applications for Practice-based PhDs from persons interested in pursuing this mode of research. Research interests include: 17th and 18th century literature and culture; 19th century literature; 20th and 21st century literature and theory; medieval studies; Shakespeare and renaissance; creative writing and practice-based research.

Tuition and Fee Information for PhD in English at Royal Holloway, University of London

For further information on course fees, please see Royal Holloway’s website by clicking on the Course contact details below. Part-time fees are approximately half of the full-time fee. All postgraduate fees are subject to inflationary increases. This means that the overall cost of studying the programme via part-time mode is slightly higher than studying it full-time in one year. Royal Holloway's policy is that any increases in fees will not exceed 5% for continuing students. For further information see tuition fees see our terms and conditions. Please note that for research programmes, we adopt the minimum fee level recommended by the UK Research Councils for the Home tuition fee. Each year, the fee level is adjusted in line with inflation (currently, the measure used is the Treasury GDP deflator). Fees displayed here are therefore subject to change and are usually confirmed in the spring of the year of entry. For more information on the Research Council Indicative Fee please see the RCUK website. For EU nationals starting a degree in 2021/22, the UK Government has recently confirmed that you will not be eligible to pay the same fees as UK students. This means you will be classified as an international student. At Royal Holloway, we wish to support those students affected by this change in status through this transition. For eligible EU students starting their course with us in September 2021, we will award an automatic fee reduction which brings your fee into line with the fee paid by UK students. This will apply for the duration of your course. These estimated costs relate to studying this particular degree programme at Royal Holloway. Costs, such as accommodation, food, books and other learning materials and printing, have not been included.
