    About

Combine numeracy with detailed subject knowledge and initiative to solve complex engineering problems that improve the world we live in.

Our course teaches you how to use physical science, mathematics and computing to assess engineering systems. You'll combine this with creative innovation, and a focus on design and business to help give you the well-rounded set of skills professional engineers need.

At Bath, we take pride in playing a part in developing our students to not only fulfil their potential but also to prepare them for the challenges engineers face in the world beyond university. With this in mind, our course complements your engineering knowledge with transferable skills like complex problem solving and critical thinking. And it allows you to reflect on wider issues that impact engineering such as ethics, sustainability and environmental awareness.

Practical project work is central to your study experience. In your final year, you'll get the chance to put theory into practice with a semester-long, full-time individual project. You can also join one of our teams to take part in international competitions such as Formula Student or the Shell Eco Marathon.

    Entry Requirements

    Selection

Our Mechanical Engineering courses are extremely popular and places are limited - admissions for this course is highly selective. We cannot guarantee you an offer of a place even if you meet or exceed our typical entry requirements.

We consider your whole application, rather than any one factor when making selection decisions, focusing on:

    • Your previous academic achievements (such as GCSEs)
    • Your predicted or achieved grades in most recent study
    • Your subjects studied at A level (or equivalent)
    • Your personal statement

All factors are important- having strong predicted grades alone will not necessarily secure you an offer.

Find out more about our selection process for A level students

If you study qualifications other than A levels the same principles will usually apply but we may consider them differently. For example, previous academic achievements may be less relevant if you are studying a broader baccalaureate- style qualification like the IB Diploma or French Baccalaureate.

We will not usually consider alternative or supplementary personal statements for this course- your application will be assessed based on the personal statement you submit through UCAS only. If you are applying to multiple subject areas across your UCAS choices, your personal statement will need to be relevant for Mechanical Engineering.

    Support

Having a diverse student body is very important to us and we aim to admit students with the greatest potential to succeed, regardless of background or circumstances. We also know that the context in which you study can impact your ability to perform your best, or limit which subjects or qualifications you are able to study. We consider any application based on its merits, including your background and circumstances, including through:

    When you may hear

We aim to make decisions for applicants as soon as possible.

We take our responsibility to be fair to all applicants seriously, and as a result many decisions need to wait until we have assessed all applications received by the UCAS equal consideration deadline in January.

While a small number of offers will be made between October and January, most offers will be made in February and March.
