About Bachelor of Secondary Education

The BAE program in secondary education prepares students to educate learners in grades 6-12 in the content area of the student's choice.

Students develop strong content knowledge, instructional competency and professional skills needed to lead successful classrooms in middle and high schools. This program provides extensive experience in integrating educational technology and has a strong focus on teaching and learning practices that foster equitable access and outcomes for diverse secondary populations. Students select one content area as their subject emphasis in which they will take at least 24 credit hours. Content areas, which may vary depending on location, include biology, business, chemistry, earth and space sciences, economics, English, general science, geography, health, history, mathematics, physics, physical education, political science and American government, and some foreign languages.

Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College has developed a team-based approach to teacher preparation, allowing students to participate in professional experiences (internships and teaching residencies) with a team of peers while receiving guidance and support from ASU faculty members and highly qualified certified teachers. Team-based professional experiences are designed to prepare students to work with mutually supportive colleagues to address the academic and social-emotional needs of learners. The primary goal of professional experiences is to provide students with multiple opportunities to apply knowledge learned in coursework to practice in the classroom.

Students complete a series of internships prior to a semester-long, full-time teaching residency. With the support of a certified mentor teacher and ASU faculty, students are able to practice what is learned during coursework in learning environments.

Graduates earn an institutional recommendation from ASU for the Arizona teaching credential in Secondary Education, 6-12, from the Arizona Department of Education. To be eligible for a secondary education credential in Arizona, students must meet all requirements specified by the Arizona Department of Education, including passing the appropriate Arizona educator subject knowledge exam, as well as the professional knowledge exam offered through the National Evaluation Series or Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments. Individuals who have previously earned a bachelor's or master's degree in the content area may be eligible to waive the subject knowledge exam and should contact [email protected] to learn more.

Format option
This program is also offered via ASU Sync. ASU Sync enables students to attend live classes remotely via Zoom. Classes are designed to foster active collaboration and discussion in real-time with faculty and peers. ASU Sync students need to reside in Arizona throughout the duration of the program. Students on I-20 visas are not permitted to complete courses via Sync and should speak with an advisor about other options to complete this program.

The Bachelor of Arts in Education in secondary education via ASU Sync is available for transfer students who reside in Arizona. These students must have completed an associate degree by the time they enroll at ASU.

Concurrent degree
With this option, undergraduate students can pair the Bachelor of Arts in Education in secondary education with either the BS in biological sciences or the BA in chemistry. This choice allows students to graduate with two degrees, a greater understanding of the field of education, and a credential to teach.

Entry Requirements

Academic requirements

First-year students must have a 3.00 grade point average (GPA) (a "B" or better where "A"=4.00) from a secondary school.

Some ASU programs may have higher admission or English proficiency requirements and may consider a minimum ACT or SAT score.

Must have three years of high school work (If you are currently in high school, ASU needs to see 9–11 grade work. If you have completed high school then ASU needs to see 10–12 grade work).

Must have and present a completed high school diploma or certificate.

Conditional admission

ASU may offer conditional undergraduate admission to international applicants to an on-campus program who meet the academic (aptitude) requirements but who are not proficient in English. This offer of conditional admission will give you time to improve your English proficiency before you start classes at ASU. Your conditional admission offer is good for up to three semesters, during which time you must meet one of these requirements to begin your ASU experience.

Competency requirements

International students who completed high school outside the U.S. are required to meet the following competency requirements:

Math: four years (algebra I, geometry, algebra II and one course requiring algebra II as a prerequisite).
Laboratory science: three years total (one year each from any of the following areas are accepted: biology, chemistry, earth science, integrated sciences and physics).

International students who attended four years of high school in the U.S. are required to meet the competency requirements.

Secondary and post-secondary documentation

All documents must be an original or an attested copy with an original institutional seal and/or signature. Photocopies, notarized copies, faxes or scans are not considered original documents. All documents must be translated into English if the original is not issued in English.

Note: Before mailing or sending any documentation, you must fill out an ASU application. Sending documents before doing so will delay the processing of your application. It is also recommended that you include your ASU EMPLID on the envelope of any documents being mailed to ASU.

All college work must be reported at the time of filling out your application.
We must see all transcripts/academic records from all institutions that you have ever attended (regardless if you have finished the program at that institution or not).

Submit your ACT or SAT scores (optional).

ACT or SAT scores are not required for admission, but may be submitted for ASU course placement or as supplemental information. Have your scores sent to ASU from ACT or College Board when you register for the test.

Once you’ve completed all these steps, ASU will review your application. To see if you have any missing items, and to review your admission status and I-20 status, sign in at My ASU using your ASURITE UserID, which is sent to you after you apply for admission.

Activate My ASU and your ASURITE UserID

You will receive your ASURITE UserID and activation code via email within one to three business days of submitting your application. If you have previously applied to ASU, your ASURITE UserID will remain the same. You'll use your ASURITE UserID to login to My ASU. If you have previously applied to ASU, your ASURITE UserID will remain the same. If you have not previously activated My ASU, have your activation code sent to you by submitting your ASU ID number and last name. If you have trouble logging in with your ASURITE UserID, contact the ASU Help Desk at 855-278-5080 or contact.asu.edu.
