Master of Arts in Communication

Application Process

Applicants for the MA must hold bachelor's degrees from an accredited college or university and must take the General Test of the GRE. They must submit a statement of purpose, undergraduate transcripts, GRE scores, a writing sample, recommendation review forms, and letters of recommendation for consideration by an admissions committee.

MA Degree Requirements

Students may pursue either a thesis or a non-thesis option for the MA in Communication. The MA-thesis option requires 31 hours beyond the bachelor's degree, including the thesis. The MA-non-thesis option requires 30 hours beyond the bachelor's degree, including appropriate field experience.

The following courses are required for the MA in Communication:

COMM 7010 Qual Comm Research
COMM 7020 Quant Comm Research

Upon completion of the required classes, students must pass a written qualifying examination covering material presented in these three courses before continuing in the degree program. All remaining hours are elective course work.

MA-thesis option students will enroll in a minimum of 4 thesis hours (COMM 7990). MA-non-thesis option students will enroll in a minimum of 3 non-thesis project hours (COMM 7980).

All students seeking the master's degree must pass comprehensive exams prior to graduation. The exams include both written and oral components. The nature of the written portion of the comprehensive exams will vary depending on the choice of the thesis or non-thesis option. For students choosing the thesis option, the thesis typically constitutes the written portion of the comprehensive examination. Students choosing the non-thesis option must pass a written examination covering the program of study as well as any research and special project/internship/field experience.

There is no foreign language requirement.

Graduate Certificate in Communication Studies

Application Process

Applicants for the Graduate Certificate must hold bachelor's degrees from accredited colleges or universities and must take the General Test of the GRE. An admissions committee evaluates the applicant's statement of purpose, undergraduate record, GRE scores, writing sample, recommendation review forms, and letters of recommendation.

Requirements

The Graduate Certificate in Communication Studies requires 18 hours beyond the bachelor's degree. It does not require a thesis or field experience. The following courses are required for the Graduate Certificate in Communication Studies:

Requirements and Admission Criteria for Master of Communication at Auburn University

Entry Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university.
Graduate Record Exam (GRE) General Test if required by the department. Auburn University’s ETS institution code is 1005.
Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) for Management, Finance, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Accountancy programs. Auburn’s GMAT institution codes are:
Successful international applicants must score at least 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper version (pBT), 213 on the computer version (cBT), and 79 on the internet version (iBT). Additionally, successful applicants must score minimums of 16 on the listening, reading, speaking, and writing components of the iBT. Auburn University’s ETS institution code is 1005. Auburn will also accept a 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam.

International applicants required to submit a language test score have several options of certifying their English proficiency.

The TOEFL or IELTS will be the only accepted language proficiency tests for admission to Auburn University Graduate School. We do not accept the Duolingo English Test.

ETS has also created the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition to meet the needs of students who are unable to take the test in a test center due to COVID-19. The test is taken on your own computer at home and is identical in content, format and on-screen experience to the TOEFL iBT test taken at a test center. Up to three (3) letters of recommendation may be required by the department. Applicants should contact the department to find out, first, if letters are required. If so, how many? And how should these letters be submitted?
International applicants must demonstrate full financial sponsorship if accepted into a graduate program, proof of a comprehensive medical insurance plan and submit an Official Statement Of Finance for International Students Form for 2023-2024. Application fee payment: $60 for domestic students; $70 for international students. The following applicants are eligible for a fee waiver:
