Spanish – MA, MHS

Graduate studies in Spanish lead to the Master of Arts (MA) in Spanish or the Master of Hispanic Studies (MHS). The Spanish graduate program is designed to prepare students for careers in teaching, business, government, world affairs, diplomacy, social service, and law enforcement and for doctoral studies in Spanish, with emphases such as literature, linguistics, or world language education. Students may begin their graduate studies at the beginning of any semester during the academic year.

Admission Requirements

Candidates wishing to pursue the MA or the MHS must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, with at least 38 semester hours of undergraduate Spanish course work above the freshman level and satisfactory scores on the General Test of the GRE. International students must have acceptable scores on the TOEFL. Applicants lacking course requirements need to make up deï¬ciencies before admission to the graduate program.

Applicants should ensure that the following materials are sent to the Graduate School via the Graduate Web Application and Admission Process (https://web.auburn.edu/GWAAP/default.aspx ):

Official transcripts from every undergraduate institution attended
Official scores from the General Test of the GRE sent from ETS (for domestic students; not required for international students)
Official scores from the TOEFL (for international students)

Writing sample. A writing sample in Spanish should be submitted to the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the time of the application. The writing sample typically is a research paper completed for a course taken as an undergraduate, usually a paper written for a senior-level literature or civilization course. It should be a minimum of five pages, typed.

Applicants should also provide two speaking samples electronically via a OneDrive folder shared privately with each candidate once the formal application has been completed through the Apply Yourself online system:

Speaking biographical sample: Candidates must provide a 2-3 minute extemporaneous autobiography on the candidate's relevant background, including an explanation of the candidate's interest in pursuing a graduate degree in Spanish, and his/her professional plans for the future.
Reading sample: The second speaking sample should be a reading from a printed text, for example, a poem, a paragraph or two from a novel or short story, or a newspaper article. Applicants should identify the selection on the recording. This selection should be approximately 1-2 minutes in length.
The speaking samples will be requested electronically through a OneDrive folder shared privately with each candidate once the formal application has been completed through the Apply Yourself online system.

Courses and Other Graduation Requirements

The MA requires at least 30 semester hours including 4 credit hours for thesis.

Candidates for the MHS must earn a minimum of 36 semester hours in their major, but no thesis is required. A concentration consisting of 6 semester hours of graduate-level courses in a related ï¬eld or ï¬elds may be earned as part of the MHS degree. These 6 hours do not have to be taken in the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.

Both degrees require satisfactory performance on the comprehensive examinations.

Reading knowledge of one other world language is required. This knowledge may be demonstrated by earning a passing score on the proficiency test for that language or by completing the first-year sequence (or equivalent) in that language with a grade of B or better.

Requirements and Admission Criteria for Master of Spanish at Auburn University

Entry Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university.
Graduate Record Exam (GRE) General Test if required by the department. Auburn University’s ETS institution code is 1005.
Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) for Management, Finance, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Accountancy programs. Auburn’s GMAT institution codes are:
Successful international applicants must score at least 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper version (pBT), 213 on the computer version (cBT), and 79 on the internet version (iBT). Additionally, successful applicants must score minimums of 16 on the listening, reading, speaking, and writing components of the iBT. Auburn University’s ETS institution code is 1005. Auburn will also accept a 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam.

International applicants required to submit a language test score have several options of certifying their English proficiency.

The TOEFL or IELTS will be the only accepted language proficiency tests for admission to Auburn University Graduate School. We do not accept the Duolingo English Test.

ETS has also created the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition to meet the needs of students who are unable to take the test in a test center due to COVID-19. The test is taken on your own computer at home and is identical in content, format and on-screen experience to the TOEFL iBT test taken at a test center. Up to three (3) letters of recommendation may be required by the department. Applicants should contact the department to find out, first, if letters are required. If so, how many? And how should these letters be submitted?
International applicants must demonstrate full financial sponsorship if accepted into a graduate program, proof of a comprehensive medical insurance plan and submit an Official Statement Of Finance for International Students Form for 2023-2024. One official transcript of all undergraduate and any graduate credits from each school previously attended. If an Auburn University transcript, the Graduate School will acquire the transcript for you. Official electronic transcripts from domestic institutions may be sent to [email protected].
International applicants should provide an official original language transcript and final diploma/certificate(s) accompanied by a certified English translation of each document.
Application fee payment: $60 for domestic students; $70 for international students. The following applicants are eligible for a fee waiver:

- Florida A&M Feeders Program – must submit a memo from Faculty sponsor
- GEM applicants – must submit a copy of their GEM application
- Active Duty Military – with a letter confirming duty
- Applying for an approved dual program – the second application fee is waived

This application is part of the ApplyYourself Application Network. You will receive a PIN and Password so that you can return to work on your application over several sessions.
