    About

To execute their strategic objectives, business leaders must understand and communicate with a wide array of stakeholders. This theory-into-practice course examines the communication skills required of successful business leaders when meeting with clients, leading executive teams, collaborating with colleagues, and coaching employees one on one. The course explores critical channels of communication distinctly different from formal management presentations. Topics and modules will vary depending upon student assessments and preferences; students will typically work on assignments that help them: Demonstrate emotional intelligence Communicate through dialogue Enhance collaboration abilities Lead successful meeting communication Contribute effectively to team consensus building Provide and accept constructive feedback Facilitate team decision making Conduct effective performance appraisal interviews Mediate workplace conflict Develop effective listening skills Master the non-verbal messages of a leader Practice effective influence skills in dyads and small groups Coach and motivate employees Manage change communication challenges Analyze the communication needs of key stakeholders Evaluate the effectiveness of written business communications The course operates on a business meeting model/format (as opposed to an all-lecture format) with students managing meetings, discussions and class activities as they apply and polish their leadership communication practices. Course materials incorporate readings, communication-modeling video clips, class exercises, role plays and other activities. Grading is based on student preparation and performance in class role plays and team exercises. This is part of the two-course management communication core sequence designed to prepare students for the challenging demands of communicating strategically as leaders and managers in important business situations.
