About PhD in Conflict and Collaboration

This graduate seminar will introduce you to theories and research on conflict in collaborative settings. We will examine interpersonal, team, and intergroup collaboration and conflict, with a focus on organizational implications. We will explore how conflict is a necessary and often desirable component of collaboration, focusing on the antecedents, features, and consequences of conflict in collaborative groups. We will meet once a week and the class will have a discussion format. Each week we will cover an area in depth by exploring major theories, reviewing a selected set of readings, and discussing some of the critical issues that the readings raise with regard to both theory and research methods. Students play a critical role in each class session. Students are expected to complete the weekly readings, prepare discussion questions prior to class, and lead discussions of the assigned articles. The final paper will consist of a research proposal that advances the study of conflict and collaboration, including theory development, hypotheses generation, and a proposed research design to test the hypotheses.
