The secondary education degree is designed for you to obtain a double major in secondary education and your chosen content area -- English, history, mathematical sciences, ASL, French or Spanish. Field experiences and clinical practice are critical components that allow you to apply your knowledge, skills and dispositions in a variety of settings. All field experiences are monitored to ensure that you have a chance to work with exceptional students and students from different ethnic, racial, gender and socioeconomic groups. The experiences represent a variety of early and ongoing school-based opportunities in which you may observe, assist, tutor, instruct or conduct applied research. These experiences extend the South Carolina Assisting, Developing and Evaluating Professional Teaching (ADEPT) performance standards into practice in school settings. Our focus is on meeting the needs of all the children you will teach.

English Teaching Area: Students who select this area will typically teach high school English, but depending on the school offerings, you may also be able to teach electives involving literature and comp topics. An additional course is required to be qualified to teach advanced placement (AP) English.
Mathematics Teaching Area: Students who select this area will typically teach algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, or pre-calculus, but depending on the school offerings, you may also be able to teach electives in mathematics. An additional course is required to be qualified to teach AP calculus.
Social Studies (History) Teaching Area: Students who select this area will typically teach history, but depending on the school offerings, you may also be able to teach economics, psychology or sociology. An additional course is required to be qualified to teach AP history.
Modern Languages Teaching Area (beginning Fall 2022): Students who select this area will choose an emphasis area in ASL, French or Spanish. Most students will teach at the high school level, but they will be certified to teach PK-12 modern languages. While the modern languages program is anchored in secondary education and most field experiences will be at the high school level, students will be exposed to all grade bands.

Entry Requirements
For the 2022 admissions cycle, Clemson has adopted a test-optional policy. Applicants are not required to submit a standardized test score to be considered for admission to Clemson for the 2022-2023 academic year.
If you choose that test scores should be used, your scores must be submitted electronically by the respective testing agency. Clemson’s institutional code for SAT is 5111, and the code for ACT is 3842. Clemson super-scores both the SAT and the ACT. For the SAT, this means that the overall total SAT score will then be derived by taking the highest of the evidence-based reading and writing/math scores.
According to The ACT, superscoring at Clemson means that we “consider a student’s highest ACT section (or subtest) scores regardless of test date. The super composite ACT score is calculated as the average of the best ACT English, Reading, Math, and Science subject scores and is used as one of multiple factors in admission and financial aid.”
