The interdisciplinary field of African and African American Studies (AAAS) provides an invaluable foundation in critical thinking, research, writing, and analysis—skills that form the core of a liberal arts education. The African and African American Studies Program at Dartmouth originated in 1969, making it one of the oldest programs of its kind in the nation. Utilizing innovative avenues of theoretical and empirical investigation, students explore questions and issues that shape the historical, social, political and cultural constructions and transformations of the African diaspora.
