The University Program in Materials Science and Engineering is a multi-disciplinary graduate program that resides within the Graduate School. This multi-department program is designed to accommodate M.S. and Ph.D. students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds and to help create a thriving materials community across campus through shared curricular experiences. A graduate seminar course that emphasizes student participation and an experiential fabrication and characterization course in the Shared Materials Instrumentation Facility are just two examples of the engaging educational approach of this program. The University Program in Materials Science and Engineering is a core component of the Duke Materials Initiative (https://dmi.duke.edu/). As such, the program involves faculty from eight participating departments in the Pratt School of Engineering and Trinity College of Arts and Sciences (Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, and Physics). As a result, students in this program have a wide range of research areas and faculty advisors available to match their interests (https://dmi.duke.edu/about/faculty). In addition, the potential for unique exposure and access to the School of Medicine, the Nicholas School of the Environment, the Sanford School of Public Policy, the Duke University Energy Initiative, and the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Initiative can provide the resources needed for students to chart their own paths. Limited financial aid is available to select M.S. candidates through academic scholarships.
