Materials discovery and characterization is one of the drivers of experimental condensed matter physics. In the past this process has led to rapid development of materials-based technologies that are ubiquitous in our lives today, including smart phones, electric vehicles, and renewable energy technologies. With the ability to grow and measure high quality materials, leading to a better understanding of the physics that they host, we can begin to see a future in which “materials by design†becomes possible. Paramount to that future is the education of the next generation of material growers and measurers, which has been identified as a national need by the National Academies of Sciences in the 2009 report “Frontiers in Crystalline Matter: From Discovery to Technology†(recommendation 3).
A major in Physics and Materials will help to prepare the materials workforce of tomorrow in order to meet the future demand for advanced materials for both scientific research and industrial applications. In addition, FSU has committed resources to the graduate program in Materials Science and Engineering, and this is a natural next step, especially since it will also provide students with specialized skills and knowledge for materials-related careers right out of college.
The FSU Physics Department also offers majors in: Physics, Physics & Astrophysics, and Physical Science.

Entry Requirements
Complete the following items on the Application Status Check by the application deadline:

Applicants whose educational history has not followed a curriculum patterned after the U.S. educational system are encouraged to submit their academic records to a foreign-credential-evaluation agency for a secondary-school evaluation to include a grade-point-average calculation.
- If your school follows a U.S. patterned curriculum, you will be asked to complete the Self-reported Student Academic Record (SSAR). To learn more about the SSAR, view our FAQ.
- If your school follows an exam-based curriculum, you will be asked to submit official or certified copies of your exam results.
- All other applicants should submit official or certified copies of all secondary-school records and secondary-school evaluation. All credentials from non-U.S. institutions must be evaluated before the application deadline by a foreign-credential-evaluation agency to include a U.S. equivalent grade point average. We recommend a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. All academic records should be issued in the native language and be accompanied by a certified English translation.

- All transcripts/academic records that are not in English must be accompanied by certified English translations.
- To be considered "certified," documents should be true copies that are signed and dated by an educational official familiar with academic records. Any translated record should be literal and not an interpretive translation. Documents signed by a notary or other public official with no educational affiliation will not be accepted.
- If the transcript/academic record does not indicate the degree earned and date the degree was awarded, separate proof of degree is required.

How to Apply for Bachelor of Physics and Materials at Florida State University

- Students should apply for the term they wish to enroll in at the University. Students are not automatically considered for the summer term if not eligible for the fall term.
