About Bachelor of Chemistry

Chemistry is the study of matter: its properties, structures, and changes. It's the common link between virtually every science, including astronomy, physics, biology, and geology. If you think about it, everything involves chemistry. And we think about it with rigor and creativity here at the Department of Chemistry at Fordham, an American Chemical Society approved program.

You get a solid foundation in modern chemical theory through rigorous coursework and hands-on laboratory experience. You'll use state-of-the-art instrumentations to understand organic, physical, analytical, inorganic, and biochemical. You'll join faculty mentors in ongoing research projects__and by junior and senior year, you'll be able to present and publish your research.

You will learn to work independently, develop scientific writing skills, engage in responsible and safe work habits, and get trained in the use of state-of-the-art instrumentation.

Get published as an undergraduate? It happens routinely in the chemistry department at Fordham. Research conducted in our department appears in peer-reviewed journals and at scientific conferences all over the U.S.

But you'll learn more than chemistry. You'll also study philosophy, theology, history, mathematics, languages, and the performing arts through Fordham's common core curriculum, the centerpiece of our liberal arts education. We want you to excel in your field__and as a human being.

The student-run Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal features high-quality, peer-reviewed, original research conducted at Fordham by undergraduate students and recent graduates in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences.

Faculty work closely with chemistry majors to apply for summer internships at research facilities, universities, hospitals across the U.S. in programs supported by the National Science Foundation, the American Chemical Society, and other leading scientific organizations or institutions.

Students must also select a college when they apply to Fordham, either Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham College at Lincoln Center or the Gabelli School of Business at Rose Hill and Lincoln Center.
Students are only evaluated for the campus and college to which they apply.

Am I a first-year student or a transfer student?
Any student who earns college credit after completing a secondary school diploma is considered a transfer student, regardless of the number of credits completed. Both matriculated and non-matriculated students who earn credit will be considered a transfer. If you have audited a class or completed noncredit coursework, then you may be considered an incoming first-year student. Typically, students who complete language intensive classes, who do not earn credit, are considered incoming first-year students.

Students who begin their studies at a college or university and withdraw prior to earning credit must contact the Office of Undergraduate Admission via email at [email protected] to confirm their status. In order to be considered as a first-year, a student must withdraw prior to the add/drop date at the institution they attended and provide official documentation (college transcript, withdrawal form) indicating the date of their withdrawal. In addition, to be considered a first year, the student must not have had any financial aid disbursed from the federal government while at the college or university that he or she attended.

The Office of Undergraduate Admission will exercise professional judgment and consider each student’s circumstances to ensure that, regardless of status (first year or transfer), the best interest of the student’s needs are met related to enrollment.
