About Bachelor of Spanish Studies

Self-directed? Ambitious? A lover of Hispanic books, films, and cultures? If you want to blaze your own path to fluency in Spanish language and culture, the Spanish area studies major at Fordham might be right for you.

It's a highly individualized, interdisciplinary course of study based in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. With the help of a faculty advisor, you'll craft a rigorous course of study that fits your passions and ambitions. Most of your classes will be in Spanish. You'll study a broad range of topics, including art history, anthropology, political science, and visual arts.

In the process, you'll become fluent in Spanish, refine your analytical skills, and acquire a critical understanding of Hispanic literary and cultural tradition over the centuries.

You'll learn more than Spanish studies here. You'll also study philosophy, theology, economics, mathematics, ethics, science, and the performing arts through Fordham's common core curriculum, the centerpiece of our liberal arts education.

We want you to excel in your field__and as a human being.

As a Spanish area studies major, you take 10 required courses. It's an individualized, interdisciplinary major, so tailor a track to fit your interests. Some of the tracks our students have created:

All literature courses are taught in Spanish, and you will be required to speak in Spanish in class discussions and oral presentations.

We have two Language Learning Centers for solo studying or collaboration with classmates:

Language Learning Center at Rose Hill: a state-of-the-art, multi-use, interactive digital language laboratory with 54 self-contained computer stations equipped with the most up-to-date audio, recording, and film viewing technology.
Olga M. Ficarra/Francis J. Morison Language Laboratory at Lincoln Center: a multi-use, interactive, computer-based facility with 25 student work stations equipped with CD, audio, video, and DVD capabilities.

We offer weekly tutoring in Spanish on both campuses.

Study Abroad

We highly encourage you to spend a summer, semester, or year abroad.

We have two programs in Spain:

Spanish Language in Granada: spend a summer exploring one of the most beautiful cities in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Granada is the hometown of Federico Garcia Lorca__and a center of flamenco culture.
Fordham in Granada: spend spring semester learning Spanish language and culture at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas of the University of Granada, in the lovely 16th-century Santa Cruz palace.

Find many other ways to immerse yourself in Hispanic culture around the world through Fordham's International and Study Abroad Program. Choose from a wide range of courses taught in Spanish.

The student journal Por Granada publishes the students' final project of the course Spain in Context taught by Rafael Lamas, PhD, at Fordham in Granada.

Chat with your classmates and increase your knowledge of Hispanic culture, education, and politics through events and lectures hosted by the student club Academia Hispania.

Honor Societies

Sigma Delta Pi: our chapter of the national honor society for scholarship in Spanish language and literature hosts events, activities, and conversation.
Alpha Mu Gamma, the national collegiate foreign language honor society, has an active chapter at Fordham (Gamma Beta). Every May it initiates outstanding students of Spanish, French, German, Russian, and Italian.

- Fordham University has a need-aware admission process for first-year applicants who plan to attend Fordham for the Fall term on a non-immigrant visa.
- Applicants who plan to fully fund their study at Fordham are required to complete the Fordham University Statement of Funding. This form will be available to eligible applicants upon submission of the application.
- Applicants who plan to partially fund their study at Fordham and will apply for need-based financial aid are required to complete the CSS Profile and demonstrate an ability to pay (Expected Family Contribution) at least $30,000 USD per year.

Students must select a campus when they apply to Fordham, either Rose Hill in the Bronx or Lincoln Center in Manhattan.
Students must also select a college when they apply to Fordham, either Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham College at Lincoln Center or the Gabelli School of Business at Rose Hill and Lincoln Center.
Students are only evaluated for the campus and college to which they apply.

Am I a first-year student or a transfer student?
Any student who earns college credit after completing a secondary school diploma is considered a transfer student, regardless of the number of credits completed. Both matriculated and non-matriculated students who earn credit will be considered a transfer. If you have audited a class or completed noncredit coursework, then you may be considered an incoming first-year student. Typically, students who complete language intensive classes, who do not earn credit, are considered incoming first-year students.

Students who begin their studies at a college or university and withdraw prior to earning credit must contact the Office of Undergraduate Admission via email at [email protected] to confirm their status. In order to be considered as a first-year, a student must withdraw prior to the add/drop date at the institution they attended and provide official documentation (college transcript, withdrawal form) indicating the date of their withdrawal. In addition, to be considered a first year, the student must not have had any financial aid disbursed from the federal government while at the college or university that he or she attended.

The Office of Undergraduate Admission will exercise professional judgment and consider each student’s circumstances to ensure that, regardless of status (first year or transfer), the best interest of the student’s needs are met related to enrollment.

Note: Fordham University (its undergraduate colleges, graduate and professional schools) is an eligible institution of higher education that admits as students only persons who (i) have a high school diploma (ii) have a recognized equivalent.
