About Master of Trial Advocacy for International Students (LL.M.)
The LL.M. in Trial Advocacy for International Students program at Chicago-Kent College of Law invites foreign attorneys and law students with divergent trial practice backgrounds to gain exposure to the U.S. adversarial trial system—a system somewhat similar to newly revised “oral trials†being adopted by many other countries.
Chicago-Kents reputation in trial advocacy—as well as its physical location in Chicago—provides a distinctive masters degree in trial advocacy in a world-class setting. Students gain hands-on litigation experience through an externship with a government agency, such as the Cook County States Attorneys Office, Illinois Attorney Generals Office, or Cook County Public Defenders Office; or a dispute resolution/mediation practice; or a criminal or civil litigation practice.

Entry Requirements
This program is open only to foreign-trained lawyers and law students.
English language competency is essential in order to participate meaningfully in the advocacy programs and most especially in the externship; otherwise, students may be limited in what they can do within their externships.

English Program Requirements
International students who fit into any of the following categories will be considered to have met the requirement:
- Residents of a country where English is the only official language and who is a native English speaker
- Graduates of U.S. high schools
- Completed the equivalent of Iowa State’s English 150 or 250 with a grade of B or better at an accredited U.S. 2 year or 4 year college or university.
CONDITIONAL ADMISSION
If you meet all admission requirements but do not meet our English proficiency requirements, Iowa State offers conditional admission to attend our Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP). If you would like to enroll in IEOP, on the application choose "I would like to enroll in Iowa State’s IEOP program before I begin the academic study.”
