    About PhD in Business and Technology

    The Business and Technology Ph.D. Program is a full-time residential program. The program will focus on theory development and testing in areas relating to the management of four critical resources of any organization: • Information Infrastructure (Information Systems) • Customers (Marketing) • Supply Chain Management • People (Management) Because management of these resources requires organizations to depend on all functional areas within the firm as well as partners outside the firm, adopting an inter-functional, inter-disciplinary approach is essential. Accordingly, the program and course content have been designed so that students can understand and appreciate the inter-functional, inter-disciplinary nature of business problems and situations that arise in these four areas.
  • Learning Outcome #1: Understanding and advancing knowledge This objective is measured through the use of a comprehensive exam in each area of study. If a student does not pass this exam after two attempts, they are dismissed from the program. In the past three years, a total of 23 students have taken the comprehensive exam. Among those students, none of them have failed to pass the exam, yielding a 100% proficiency rate.
  • Learning Outcome #2: Creating knowledge through original research The measurement for this objective is currently under review. While each of our graduates is expected to complete a dissertation, knowledge creation is also demonstrated through the submission acceptance of pure review journal articles while in the PhD program.
  • Learning Outcome #3: Ability to teach effectively in an institution of higher education This objective is measured through student evaluations of teaching and peer evaluation of the PhD students teaching performance. Student evaluation of teaching is done each semester for all instructors of record. Our evaluation instrument is on a scale of 1(poor) to 5(excellent).

    Admission to the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering departmental graduate degree programs is contingent upon the following requirements, which will differ between degree programs:

    All Degree Programs

    • Undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale. Official documentation that meets the requirements of the Graduate College must be provided in the application. Students with a GPA below 3.0 may be admitted in some cases, with permission of the Graduate College.
    • International (non-English speaking) students need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Minimum scores for admission are: TOEFL Paper (PBT) – 550; TOEFL Internet (iBT) – 79; IELTS – 6.5

    Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees

    • The requirements listed for all degree programs above, plus:
    • Bachelors of Science degree in engineering, OR Bachelors of Science degree, non-engineering with:
      • Math through differential equations
      • College-level physics, chemistry, and biology
      • Documented competence in engineering sciences, for example: statics, mechanics of materials, dynamics, fluids, thermodynamics

    For applicants with a non-engineering BS degree, the ABE Graduate Programs Committee, in concert with the ABE Engineering Curriculum Committee, will review an applicant’s academic record and transcripts with respect to above requirements.
