Ph.D. in Special Education Overview

The Ph.D. program in Special Education is designed for the college graduate who holds a master's degree in special education or a related area and who is interested in pursuing advanced studies in special education. It prepares students for careers in educational leadership in higher education as teacher trainers, consultants, and researchers. Our training through 20-courses (60 credits) is individualized and emphasizes applied research, faculty-student mentoring, and the development of professional competencies such as writing for publication, college teaching, grant writing, and program administration.

Entry Requirements

International applicants must hold an American bachelor’s degree or an equivalent foreign degree requiring at least 16 years of primary, secondary, and university education. International applicants applying for regular graduate student status must submit all documents required for that status.

University admissions criteria for non-degree graduate students are:

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with an overall grade point average of at least 3.0. Applicants with undergraduate GPAs below 3.0 may be admitted with the approval of the department in which they wish to take courses

Evidence that the applicant is presently a student in good standing in an appropriate graduate program at an accredited institution

Evidence that the applicant has received an appropriate graduate or other advanced degree from an accredited institution.
