    About Certificate in Education

    The mission of the department of teacher education and certification is to provide high quality teachers to school districts in the south central region of Missouri and beyond.  The vision of the department is our teachers inspire the next generation of students, particularly those in underrepresented groups, to pursue educational and STEAM career fields by connecting content knowledge to real world application, while creating a safe learning space for students.

    Most programs may be completed in four academic years, although you may wish to carry lighter course loads during the regular academic semesters.  Admission to the university does not automatically qualify a student to participate in the professional component of the teacher education program. That participation is granted upon demonstration of a high level of academic and professional competence.  To be admitted to certification programs, you must maintain a 3.0 GPA in their content area and professional requirements, have an ACT of 22 or a 220 on all sections of the Missouri General Education Assessment or apply for an exemption, apply for a substitute certificate after 60 credit hours, and complete an interview with the department chair.  You must also have a cleared background check for any field experiences.

    The last semester of your certification program will be student teaching; all other coursework must be successfully completed to be eligible.  You must pass the Missouri content exam before applying to student teaching.  For other guidelines for student teaching, please refer to the department handbook.

    All certification programs are approved by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.  If you want to teach in another state, you should investigate the reciprocity regulations for educator licensure or certification.

    Early Childhood

    In Missouri, early childhood certification spans birth through third grade; you will have the opportunity to be placed in the S&T Child Development Center for field experiences.  You will earn a bachelor of science in education with an emphasis in early childhood education; select courses in this degree may be used for the national Child Development Associate credential.  For a list of required courses, please see the early childhood section of the department webpage.

    Educational Studies

    The Educational Studies emphasis is for students who want to work in informal educational settings.  This emphasis area does not lead to Missouri teacher certification.

    Elementary Education

    In Missouri, elementary teacher certification spans grades 1-6. You will earn a bachelor of science degree in education with an emphasis in elementary education. Graduates of this program will have the knowledge of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) to share with 1st through 6th grade students.     Middle School Education

    In Missouri, middle school certification spans grades 5-9.  You will earn a bachelor of science degree with a teaching certificate for one of the following areas:

    Secondary Education

    At S&T, you will earn a degree in your content area while pursuing secondary teaching certification.  See the degree requirements for those departments in the catalog for more information.

    World Language Education

    Students may earn French or Spanish teaching certification through the Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies.  In Missouri, this teaching certificate is grades K-12.  For a list of approved courses, please see the department of teacher education and certification's website.

    General Education Requirements

    General education requirements are intended to provide you with the intellectual knowledge and skills for basic education. This body of knowledge and skills is arranged according to two broad categories: systems of symbolic thought and communication represented by linguistic and mathematical studies and systems of intellectual inquiry represented by basic academic disciplines. In addition, you must complete one course or unit in cultural diversity and the general education requirements can be fulfilled at the same time.

    The following are generic requirements for all education students. However, any degree requirement not included in these general education requirements must be included in the professional requirements or subject matter requirements for each degree program.

    Symbolic Thought and Communications

    1. Linguistic Studies (9 semester hours) You are required to take two courses in written communication and one course in oral communication. You must have a grade of "C" or better in each course.
    2. Mathematical Studies (3 semester hours) The course must be college algebra or above and you must earn a grade of  "C" or better.

    Systems of Intellectual Inquiry

    1. Humanities At least one course each from two of the following areas required: art, music, philosophy, literature and theater.
    2. Natural Science One course in biological sciences and one in physical science is required. One of these two courses must include a laboratory.
    3. Social and Behavioral Science One course in each of the following areas is required: (1) American History, (2) American Government, and (3) General Psychology.

    Entry Requirements

    • Missouri S&T seeks international students who have a strong probability of succeeding at the university. Admission is selective and based on a combination of secondary school core curriculum (a set of required secondary school classes), ACT and/or SAT composite scores (if available), grade point average (GPA), and class rank percentile. (For non-ranking schools, GPA will be used to evaluate your application).
    • International students must fulfill the same admission requirements as domestic applicants, but standardized test scores (ACT or SAT) are not required but should be submitted if available. Meeting the minimum requirements, however, does not guarantee admission, nor does it guarantee admission to a particular program. Missouri S&T appreciates well-rounded students and evaluates each application individually.
    • In addition, international students must fulfill Missouri S&T's English language proficiency requirement. To view a list of countries who are exempt from providing English test scores, please click here. Minimum English proficiency test score requirements are 80 for TOEFL, 6.5 for IELTS, 58 for PTE, or 105 for Duolingo. We also accept SAT English score minimum of 500.
    • Missouri S&T may request that you provide an official transcript evaluation from the World Education Services (WES). If this is required, it will be visible on your application checklist after submission of your application, or an admissions representative will contact you to request it.

    How to Apply for Certificate in Education at Missouri University of Science and Technology

      1. Complete the online application, which will take you through several screens. Note that once you start filling out the application, you can save it at any time and return to it later. Follow the instructions on each screen and note the following:
        • First-time applicants will need to create an account. When you submit your name and email, you will receive a temporary PIN/password sent to your email. Next, you activate your account and change your password. Note your email and password you entered for your account, as you will use this to log into the application portal to complete your application or check your status.
          • Start a new application and select the following:

            • Degree level: Bachelor’s Degree
            • Area of Study: Select the major you wish to pursue. Please select a specific area of study – do not select Undecided or Undecided Engineering, since upon admission your specific degree program will need to be listed on your I-20 or DS-2019.
          • Enter personal background information, including:
            • Your permanent and mailing addresses: note that as an international student, your permanent address should be your address in your home country.
            • Citizenship information – enter your citizenship and specify which type of visa you will request (F-1, for which you will receive an I-20; J-1, for which you will receive a DS-2019). Please contact the International Enrollment office at [email protected].
          • On the Test Scores screen, choose Add Test and enter information for the specific tests you have taken (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo, ACT, SAT).
          • An admission decision can be made based on unofficial transcripts. Students can upload transcripts through their Application Status Page. Transcripts must be received from all secondary schools you have attended that show courses taken, grades earned, rank in class, grade point average and class of division earned, if applicable.
          • On the Personal Statement screen, you may optionally submit a statement of 500 words or less, discussing a topic you wish the admissions committee to review. This statement may include your educational goals, discussion of personal circumstances, and so on.
          • The final screen, Review, will list any errors with your application (for example, if required information is missing). Once your application is complete, choose SubmitApplication.
          • Please note that an application fee will be required once your application has been submitted.
          • We accept unofficial transcripts and test scores during the application process. Your official transcripts and ACT/SAT test scores will be required after an offer of admission is made.
      2. If available, request ACT or SAT scores be sent directly to Missouri S&T. Missouri S&T’s codes are as follows: ACT – 2398; SAT – 6876.
      3. Official transcripts must be sent after admission. Please note the following:
