About Bachelor of Creative Writing

Director: David Galef

The creative writing minor, open to all undergraduates, requires six courses for a total of 18 credits. Students choose one of two main genres to focus in, either fiction or poetry, and take beginning, intermediate, and advanced workshops in that field, ending with a capstone project. *Note: The 400-level fiction and poetry workshops are only offered in the Spring semester.

In addition, students take two workshops in other genres, as well as a literature course in their chosen genre.

Students can also major in English with a creative writing concentration. The concentration requires any four creative writing workshops, which count toward the major in English. Workshops are offered in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, memoir, and other topics; screenwriting and playwriting workshops are cross-listed through the School of the Arts.

Please note that a resume is required for Dance, Musical Theatre, and Theatre majors, but optional for all other programs.

Letter of Recommendation

For most majors, a recommendation letter is not required but is strongly encouraged. Submit recommendation letter from a college counselor or teacher.

Please note that Dance, Musical Theatre, and Theatre majors require two recommendation letters. One of your recommendation letters should speak to your candidacy for your field of study.
