    About

Master's students in NJIT's Biomedical Engineering program are expected to make significant contributions to research in their area of study, while also preparing to become leaders in academia, industry or the government.  Graduates of our program are successfully engaged in the practice of biomedical engineering within industry, academia, and government.

Our graduates should demonstrate the ability to:

    • Evaluate the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of medical equipment
    • Diagnose and interpret data, using signal processing techniques
    • Research new materials to be used for products, such as implants
    • Design and develop medical diagnostic and clinical instrumentation, equipment and procedures, using the principles of engineering
    • Develop models or computer simulations of human behavioral systems to obtain data for measuring or controlling life processes
    • Manage teams of engineers by creating schedules, tracking inventory, creating and using budgets and overseeing contract obligations and deadlines
    • Evaluate the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of biomedical equipment
    • Adapt or design computer hardware or software for medical use
    • Analyze new medical procedures to forecast likely outcomes
    • Design and deliver technology to assist people with disabilities
    • Advise and assist in the application of instrumentation in clinical environments
    • Advise hospital administrators on the planning, acquisition, and use of medical equipment
    • Install, adjust, maintain, repair, or provide technical support for biomedical equipment
    • Conduct training or in-services to educate clinicians and other personnel on proper use of equipment
    • Write documents describing protocols, policies, standards for use, maintenance and repair of medical equipment
    • Conduct preventative maintenance on equipment
    • Keep documentation of service histories on all biomedical equipment

    Masters  students in NJIT's Biomedical Engineering program are preparing for diverse fields and will work with renowned experts in these specialty areas: Biomaterials and Biocompatibility; Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine;

Cellular and Orthopedic Biomechanics; Biomedical Signal Processing; Imaging and Instrumentation; Neural and Neuromuscular Engineering. However, we expect all of our master's students to achieve these learning outcomes:

    • Develop independence in research problem-solving skills at an advanced level
    • Acquire the depth of knowledge in your area of concentration to achieve a master's level of expertise
    • Learn new methods of investigation
    • Develop new skills appropriate for the student's area of specialization
    • Cooperate with laboratory staff and students and contribute to the scholarship in the lab
    • Acquire sufficient breadth of knowledge to encourage new skills and problem- solving approaches that allow continuous learning and development
    • Develop an understanding of the diversity of research methods employed by successful investigators
    • Understand the conduct and support of research and development
    • Develop ethical reasoning skills
    • Improve communication skills for teaching and research dissemination
