About PhD in Engineering Education

Purdue has been a powerhouse for educating engineers for more than 120 years, but the academic study of how best to educate engineers has emerged in just the past few decades. Determined to lead in the discipline, in 2004 Purdue established the School of Engineering Education, the world's first such academic unit and world's first engineering education graduate program.

At Purdue, an enthusiastic and committed community of scholars (including 25+ faculty members) has developed a research base for guiding engineering education by experimenting with new teaching methods, developing curricula, assessing how students learn, and moving those findings into the classrooms of tomorrow's engineers. Our graduate degree offerings include a Ph.D. program for students wishing to pursue rigorous research in how engineering, science, technology, and math are best taught, learned, and practiced. Our online master's degree program is for those seeking to understand the field's underlying theory and more practical applications, but are not currently ready to pursue a Ph.D. Finally, our ""Teaching and Learning in Engineering"" Graduate Certificate program helps graduate students, faculty members, and industry professionals in engineering and allied STEM fields enhance their teaching and course design skills.

Submit a statement of purpose. If applying to a 2nd or 3rd choice graduate program, be sure your statement of purpose is all-inclusive, and supports your suitability for all graduate programs listed on your application.
Provide three Letters of Recommendation or the number required by your graduate program. If applying to a 2nd or 3rd choice graduate program, the program with the highest number of required recommendation letters will determine the minimum number of letters to be submitted.

For nondegree applicants:

Provide evidence of a bachelor’s degree (may be a transcript, copy of a diploma or a letter from your college/university verifying the degree).

For graduate certificate/teacher license applicants:
