About PhD in Sociology

Our program prepares students to become researchers, scholars, and teachers through a well-balanced curriculum comprising theory and methods that enable students to conduct sociological research at the forefront of the field. In addition to our cutting edge methodological training and broad sociological teaching, our program offers instruction in seven specialization areas:

Our program offers a PhD only, with students gaining a MS on the way to their PhD. Applications who have already completed a masters degree in sociology can apply to the PhD program directly, while other applicants apply to the masters level.

Please note we do not admit applicants who are only seeking an MS degree.

Submit a statement of purpose. If applying to a 2nd or 3rd choice graduate program, be sure your statement of purpose is all-inclusive, and supports your suitability for all graduate programs listed on your application.
Provide three Letters of Recommendation or the number required by your graduate program. If applying to a 2nd or 3rd choice graduate program, the program with the highest number of required recommendation letters will determine the minimum number of letters to be submitted.

For nondegree applicants:

Provide evidence of a bachelor’s degree (may be a transcript, copy of a diploma or a letter from your college/university verifying the degree).

For graduate certificate/teacher license applicants:
