About Master of Health Law

Saint Louis University's Master of Laws in Health Law is a one-year program that was created for two types of lawyers: those seeking an in-depth introduction to the practice of health law and those who have a health law background but who are seeking exposure to new developments in health law.

This highly selective program allows each student individual attention and close faculty supervision. Students are encouraged to complete scholarly writing, attend the health law colloquia and participate in directed research projects. Students may choose from a range of foundational and specialized health law and policy courses, and learn from faculty with more than 177 years of collective health law teaching experience. Students also are offered field placement opportunities, including the Health Law Semester in Washington, D.C.

Students in the program have access to SLU's top-tier faculty as well as to leading scholars, practitioners and employers. Students also will have access to our network of more than 1,150 health law alumni across the country.

Graduates will develop (to a degree necessary to be an effective professional in a position related to health law and policy) an understanding of substantive common law, statutes and regulations that control health care delivery, health insurance, and other determinants of individual and population health, which includes the powers, rights and duties of providers, insurers, regulators, and individuals.
Graduates will display proficiency (to a degree necessary to be an effective professional in a position related to health law and policy) both in synthesizing legal rules and public policies and in applying them to complex facts associated with health care delivery, payment, and other determinants of individual and population health.
Graduates will develop practical problem-solving skills (to a degree necessary to be an effective professional in a position related to health law and policy) that draw upon knowledge of substantive health laws and the skills of legal analysis.
Graduates will develop a basic understanding of the economic, ethical, operational, and political complexity associated with health care delivery, payment, and other determinants of individual and population health (to a degree necessary to be an effective professional in a position related to health law and policy), the contents of which will vary based upon a student's particular interests within health law and policy.
Graduates will develop a professional network in the field health law and policy.

Upon admission, a new student must successfully complete a virtual meeting with their academic coach to be enrolled in first term coursework.

How to Apply for Master of Health Law at Saint Louis University

Step 1: Accept or decline your admission

If you applied using SLU’s online graduate application, you can notify us about your decision to accept or decline your admission by logging in and clicking on “Manage Your Account.” From there, you can access the decision form.

If you’ve used a third-party, centralized application to apply — such as SOPHAS for public health programs or CASPA for physician administration programs — you’ll need to email us directly at [email protected] with your decision.

Step 2: Set up your SLU Net ID

Follow these step-by-step instructions to set up your SLU Net ID.

Step 3: Log into MySLU

Log into mySLU at auth.slu.edu. Use your SLU Net ID and SLU Net Password, then click "Login." Click on the "Tools" tab to find links to systems, such as Banner Self-Service and other SLU applications and systems.

When logging in for the first time, you will be directed to set up your multi-factor authentication. You will need to log in upon completing that process.

Step 4: Check with your academic department

Step 6: Submit your immunization and health insurance forms

If you decide to attend SLU, you will need to submit your immunization records and health history. You will also need to submit a health plan enrollment/waiver form.

Step 7: Visit parking and card services to obtain your SLU ID card

You’ll use your SLU ID card to access student services and campus buildings such as the library. Make sure to bring a photo ID, along with a copy of your class schedule.

Step 8: Finalize your financial aid

If you plan to take out student loans, make sure you’ve filled out your FAFSA for the current year. Contact student financial services with any questions. For questions about assistantships, contact your program.
