    About

The Certificate in TESOL aims to serve SF State undergraduates who are interested in careers that serve English language learners, either adult learners in non-credit programs in the U.S. or learners across a variety of ages and levels overseas. (This program does not provide a California K-12 teaching credential.) The Certificate courses provide an introduction to the TESOL field and the pedagogical skills and knowledge needed for an entry-level position as an ESL teacher or instructional aide. The Certificate Program is designed to be completed in one or two years and provides students with the opportunity to earn up to 15  hours of hands-on classroom or tutoring experience.

Complements Certificate in Modern Language Learning and Teaching: This certificate shares three courses and goals in developing language teaching skills with the Certificate in Modern Language Learning and Teaching, but it is distinct in the population it serves.  While the Certificate in Modern Language Learning and Teaching serves those interested in teaching foreign languages, the Certificate in TESOL serves those interested in teaching English language in the US and abroad.  In the three classes shared by both certificates, the focus of class projects and tutoring practicum placements will align with each program's goals. The fourth course (English 423) specifically addresses issues of English grammar and phonology relevant to teaching English, and in shared classes.

    1. Demonstrate knowledge and pedagogical skills for the teaching of English language or literacy.
    2. Articulate a philosophy of teaching and create appropriate English lessons for multilingual English language learners.
    3. Produce critical reflections on English teaching practices and materials, for how they embody educational values of ethics, social justice, diversity, and globalization.
