As a Russian major, you'll be enveloped by the Russian language and culture – from Russian cuisine to contemporary political issues to study abroad and a student club that connects you with other students of Russian. Our UM Russian students have a stellar record of awards – including numerous State Department's Critical Language Scholarships, Fulbright Grants and Boren Awards.

A major in Russian can be completed in as few as three years if you take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad. Our program is small and personal, with a strong commitment to mentoring students. Networking and research also help bolster students' skills and their job search post-graduation.

Entry Requirements

Academic Eligibility

First-year students: To be eligible for admission, freshman students must have met/be on track to meet all upper/senior secondary school requirements with the equivalent of a 2.5 GPA to be automatically considered for admission to undergraduate programs.

Transfer students: Transfer students must have graduated from secondary school and completed at least 12 university-level credits (1 semester) with the equivalent of a 2.0 GPA.

UM Undergraduate Admissions uses a 4.0 unweighted scale to determine GPA. If your school does not calculate GPA, we will calculate it for you when we evaluate your academic records.

Documents for Admission

Secondary school students/graduates: Please submit academic transcripts/mark sheets for grades 9-12 and secondary school leaving certificates, exam results or diplomas showing secondary school completion (if applicable)

Students who have completed at least one semester (12 U.S. credits) of university or post-secondary study: university transcript/mark sheets/exam results listing all courses, grades and credits/hours and diplomas/graduation certificates (if applicable). Students who qualify for transfer do not need to submit secondary school documents.

English translations: All documents not originally issued in English must also be accompanied by word-for-word English translations. You, the applicant, can make the translations yourself.

Admission consideration for international applicants can proceed with unofficial documents. Unofficial documents are photocopies or scans of original academic documents submitted to University of Montana directly by you, the student. Unofficial documents can be uploaded to your admission portal.

Career development in the Russian program

The UM Russian program prioritizes mentoring above all else. Even our students mentor one another.

We like to say we are "small but mighty." We're close-knit and know our students very well.

We always think about how students can build their resumes and skills so they can win awards and/or get into respected graduate or professional programs.

UM's Russian program is also home to a robust network of alumni and community members who visit classes and connect with students who have an interest in their area of knowledge. These relationships create career development opportunities for students after graduation

Networking and professional development for Russian majors

Our students are highly involved in UM's officially recognized Russian Club. They meet every week for a Conversation Table, where they can practice speaking and receive free peer tutoring. Monthly events give students the opportunity to experience Russian culture, including food, films, music and lectures. As an added benefit, the club also provides leadership opportunities with students serving as president and vice president. In 2022 and again in 2023, the club raised $1,000 for Ukraine relief efforts.

Scholarships for Russian majors

There are many funding opportunities for students who study Russian. The State Department offers Critical Language Scholarships and Boren Scholarships. Fulbright Awards are also frequently won by our students. We also offer 4-6 scholarships each year especially for Russian majors.
