Bachelor of German at The University of Vermont

The German Program at UVM provides comprehensive instruction in German language, culture and literature. The curriculum reflects a commitment to both the traditions of literary studies in German and to new developments in the field. Small classes emphasize student participation and use of the target language.

Areas of particular strength include the Age of Goethe and Romanticism; the 19th and 20th centuries; Austrian literature; exile literature; German folklore and proverbs; and Holocaust film and literature.

• Thirty credit hours of course work in German starting at the intermediate level (GERM 51/52) or higher, including at least 3 credit hours at the 200-level.
• Six credit additional hours of course work in English with German related content.

Upon completion of the BA  with major in German degree, students will be able to: 

• Demonstrate proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing across the three modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational)
• Synthesize and showcase knowledge of literary texts and other forms of cultural media from German speaking countries in their social, historical, and political contexts through close reading, textual analysis, research;
• Demonstrate transcultural competence and international/global perspective.
