Obtain sophisticated knowledge of the remarkably diverse and rich Latinx experience

In this cross-disciplinary major, you'll develop an advanced understanding and transnational appreciation of the evolving social, economic, political, and geographic histories of the Latin American experience in a vibrant, student-centered learning community.

After graduation, Latin studies students often pursue careers in public service, media broadcasting, community development, foreign affairs, citizenship and immigration, and international business.

Bachelor of Arts

Demonstrate knowledge of the classic and contemporary scholarly sources on Latin America, the Caribbean, and immigrant and migrant populations from these territories in the United States.
Demonstrate knowledge of the diverse countries, cultures, and races comprising Latin America and the Caribbean.
Demonstrate knowledge of the historic relationships among Latin American and Caribbean territories and Europe and the United States.

Entry Requirements

All applicants must arrange for their official school and/or college transcripts to be sent to us.

First-year (freshmen) applicants: You must submit an official transcript from your secondary school for admissions purposes.
Transfer applicants: You must submit official transcripts of all college and/or university work, even if you don't expect to receive transfer credit. If you've completed fewer than 24 transferable college credits, you'll also need to submit an official transcript from your secondary school for admissions purposes.

If you are admitted, you will also need to submit an official final transcript from your secondary school showing your date of graduation.

Academic transcripts in languages other than English must be accompanied by an official, certified English translation.

Transcript Evaluation

A transcript evaluation allows the review committee to correctly compare the quality of your school, coursework and grades with all other applicants.

Although not required, we accept SpanTran or WES evaluations sent from the organization directly to the University at Albany.

Other evaluation services can only be used if they require official documents directly from the institution of higher education, not the student, to evaluate coursework. The organization must also be accredited by NACES.

Our alumni hold positions in journalism, civil and human rights advocacy, community outreach, homeland security, and state and federal immigration services. Others pursue graduate studies in anthropology, labor studies, law, sociology, social welfare, and political science.

A number of graduates have successfully applied for international Fulbright English teaching assistantships and Peace Corps and AmeriCorps assignments outside of the United States.
