What is Non-Profit & Comm Leadership?
The non-profit and community leadership (ORGL-NP) track will provide an interdisciplinary set of knowledge and skills needed to work and lead in the nonprofit, community organizations, civil society organizations, charities, nongovernmental organizations, advocacy groups, or public sector. The NP certificate combines core coursework in the various functional areas of organizational leadership, with elective courses that enable students to sample a variety of topics relating to leading a nonprofit, such as leadership, evaluation and assessment, advocacy, grant writing/fundraising, volunteer recruitment and supervision, maintaining relationship and communication with donors, and best practices in fundraising and communicating with potential donors.
The objective of the certificate is to provide a fundamental understanding of nonprofit leadership as a discipline and potential career choice.
The certificate includes formal classroom training in leadership, non-profit leadership, and program evaluation, as well as a required practicum experience in a local organization. Elective coursework further allows students to hone their leadership skills while also exploring specific content knowledge in an area of interest (e.g., gender, health, urban development). Collectively, these courses provide the content knowledge and hands-on application experiences that will prepare students for careers in the public sector or for graduate study in a related field (e.g., Public Administration, Community Psychology).
