About Master of Nutrition Sciences Clinical Nutrition

The University of Cincinnati Master of Science (MS) in Nutrition Sciences – Clinical Nutrition concentration was designed exclusively for students wanting to obtain the registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) credential.

To qualify for the Clinical Nutrition concentration, you must either:

be a student in the Accelerated Dietitian Nutritionist program or
have a baccalaureate degree and a verification statement for completion of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) requirements of a nutrition and dietetics education program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

The MS in Nutrition Sciences – Clinical Nutrition concentration contains graduate coursework integrated with supervised practice experience (equivalent to the dietetic internship). At the completion of this program, students will be eligible to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration national credentialing exam for RDNs.

Don't have a DPD verification? Our Didactic Program in Dietetics certificate contains everything you need to obtain the necessary coursework.

Already have the RDN credential? Our Master of Science in Nutrition Sciences is our traditional graduate program that allows you to earn advanced nutrition knowledge, research training, and complete a thesis or capstone project. Involvement in research is often one of the ways RDNs get promoted in professional practice.

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist professionals work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, private practice settings, eating disorder centers, with athletes, in long-term care facilities, schools, supermarkets, in academia, research, health departments, business, for food companies, health clubs, and many other areas.

Beginning in 2024 to practice as a RDN, you must complete the DPD courses, obtain a master's degree, complete 1000 hours of a supervised practice internship, and pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration credentialing exam for RDNs. The RDN credential enables an individual to perform nutrition risk assessments and prescribe medical nutrition therapy to treat or prevent diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disease, renal disease, etc. Dietitians also work with healthy clients who have specialized dietary needs such as athletes, vegetarians, pregnant women, and children who are fussy eaters.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for Dietitians and Nutritionists is expected to grow 11% by 2030 (much faster than the national average) and the current median pay is $61,650 per year.
