Course descriptions

The Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences major is a pre-professional program within the liberal arts and sciences curriculum. It provides a broad overview of normal speech, language and hearing development. In addition a variety of speech, language, and hearing disorders are introduced. This major permits the student to apply for graduate studies in one of two specialty areas: audiology or speech-language pathology.

Students who want to learn more about the fields of audiology and speech language pathology but are unsure about declaring the major are encouraged to take SLHS 1150. Students may declare the major by going to ppc.uconn.edu.

Successful completion of the B.A. degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences requires the following:

A total of 25 credits at the 2000-level or higher in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences.
Courses on normal development of speech, language, and hearing including: SLHS 2203, 2204, 2156Q, and 3247.
Courses on measurement and disorders of speech, language and hearing including: SLHS 3248, 4249, or 4249W, and two of the following: SLHS 4245 or 4245W, 4251, or 4254 or 4254W.
Students can also take an elective three-credit seminar in Bilingualism in Typical and Atypical populations: Language and Cognition. These three graduate-level credits can be applied toward your undergraduate degree (complete SLHS 4123) or to both, your UConn undergraduate and UConn graduate degree (complete SLHS 5123).
Twelve credits of related coursework. Related courses can be tailored to the interests and needs of the student but must be approved by a Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences advisor.
Nine credits of elective coursework. Elective courses can be any 2000-level or higher course of interest to the student.
Students must take one course in each of the following areas:
a. Statistics: STAT 2215Q b. Biological science: BIOL 1102, 1107, or 1108 c. Physical science: PHYS 1010Q or PHYS 1075Q More advanced level courses may be substituted for the courses listed above.
It is recommended that students accumulate a total of 25 hours of approved observations of assessment and treatment of speech, language and hearing disorders.

The information literacy competency is met by the successful completion of required courses.

To satisfy the writing requirement in the major, students must pass at least one course from SLHS 4245W, 4249W, or 4254W. Students may use SLHS 4296W to satisfy the writing requirement in the major.

Entry Requirements

First-year applicants should be attending an approved high school program. Upon graduation, a minimum of 16 units, with 15 in college preparatory work, must be completed. The following college preparatory courses are required for all first-year applicants:

4 years of English
3 years of math (algebra I, algebra II, and geometry or their equivalents)
2 years of social studies (including 1 year of U.S. history)
2 years of a single foreign language (3 years strongly recommended)
2 years of laboratory science
3 years of electives
School of Nursing applicants: high school chemistry is required.
School of Engineering applicants: high school chemistry and physics are required.

In addition to completion of an approved high school program, selection is based on a comprehensive review of all the information provided on the application, both academic and personal.

How to Apply for Bachelor of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences at University of Connecticut

International first-year applicants must complete either the Common Application or Apply Coalition with Scoir. There is no preference in application choice and only one application is required.

Submission of the $80 application fee (non-refundable) is available through the chosen application. Check or money order is also an acceptable form of payment and should be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions directly with the applicant’s name (as seen on the application) and date of birth.

The personal essay is required and provides the applicant an opportunity to add a unique voice to the application as well as demonstrate writing ability. The personal essay is a component on the Common Application or the Coalition Application and should range between 250 – 650 words.

Two letters of recommendation are optional but can distinguish an applicant’s character and are preferred. Recommendation letters can be sent electronically, by fax, or by postal mail.

Your submitted high school transcript(s) should include your senior classes, class rank (if applicable), and latest grades earned. Postsecondary official transcript(s) from each institution attended are also required whether or not credit is desired or expected. Transcripts must be submitted to UConn directly from the secondary institution, either electronically or by mail in a sealed envelope.

All academic credentials not written in English must be accompanied by an official, certified English translation.
