The Department of Religious Studies sees itself as a community of scholars serving the University community and the local community by teaching, research, criticism, and action. The main concern of the department is an understanding and elucidation of the Judaeo-Christian religious experience as it is exemplified in the Roman Catholic tradition. This implies not only a deep investigation of the Roman Catholic position but also a dialogue with other Christian traditions and with other world religious.

All religious studies and theology majors must show basic practical communicative proficiency in one foreign language.

Marian Studies

The International Marian Research Institute (IMRI) is no longer offering pontifical degrees and is transitioning to its new home in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Department of Religious Studies has developed Marian course offerings in connection with IMRI's transition, and offers a minor and certificates at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Entry Requirements

Official secondary transcripts (in language of original issue). Transcripts of all previously attended secondary schools, including dates of attendance, all subjects studied, grades earned and marks achieved on examinations;
- Transcripts not issued in English should be accompanied by a certified English translation.
- Proof of completion must also be provided in the form of a graduation date listed on the transcript, a diploma, or a certificate of completion. If secondary schooling is still in progress, this must be submitted as soon as completed and prior to enrollment at the University of Dayton.
