Preparing students for healthcare professions Exercise science is a major that provides students with a strong biological and physical science-based foundation complemented by individual specialty courses in biomechanics, physiology, motor control & development, and athletic training. The major in exercise science is primarily a pre-professional program, preparing students for graduate programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, medical and dental school, or advanced graduate training in exercise science. The exercise science program of study is designed to cover all courses needed to apply to graduate physical therapy programs, as well as many courses needed for other health-related graduate programs. Students not seeking postgraduate training can select career opportunities in health related clinical or research environments. Students with the goal of attending medical school should visit UD's premedical website for advising and admission information. There are two distinct pathways by which students can gain admission to a professional school. One is open to all majors and requires just a basic knowledge of science and mathematics. Students taking this option are evaluated by the Health Science Advisement and Evaluation Committee (HSAEC), which writes a University of Delaware recommendation to medical institutions of the student's choice. Approximately 90% of High Recommend students, 60% of the Recommended with Enthusiasm and 15% of the Recommended attend medical school directly following their graduation from the University of Delaware.
