The major in Art History at UGA introduces students to visual objects across a wide range of media, cultures and periods.
Students achieve a basic knowledge of the history of art within the broader context of social, intellectual, and cultural history by taking survey courses; upper level art history; major elective courses within the humanities, sciences, and social sciences (excluding studio art and art history but including a foreign language through the fourth semester); and a second approved literature course in addition to the college requirement. The combination of these courses develops critical and rhetorical skills necessary for success in the field.
Students who wish to pursue a career in Art History should consider graduate studies on the M.A. or Ph.D. level. With such advanced degrees, professional employment opportunities include college and university teaching, museum and research positions, and the art market. Graduates have secured jobs in museums, galleries, and auction houses.
Minor in Art History
A minor in Art History requires 18 credit hours. Students must complete ARHI 2300 and ARHI 2400 before beginning a minor in Art History and enrolling in a 3000-level art history course. ARHI 2300, which satisfies Area IV of the Core Curriculum, does not count toward the 18 hours required for the minor. After the student has completed 6 hours (two courses) of 3000-level art history and has at least a 3.0 combined GPA in those four courses, she or he may officially declare the minor.
