The Astrophysics major at the University of Georgia combines the fundamental study of physics (the study of matter, its motion through space and time, energy, and force) with observational astronomy (the study of celestial objects and phenomena that originate outside the Earth's atmosphere).
Students take courses in stellar and galactic astronomy, astronomical observation, astrophysics, electricity & magnetism, quantum mechanics, and others to apply theory to current astronomical and astrophysical problems. The UGA Observatory operates a 24" Cassegrain Reflecting Telescope with a 1024 x1024 Apogee AP6 CCD camera to supplement student learning. Students are encouraged to pursue experimental, theoretical, or simulational research with faculty mentors.
Career opportunities are available in private or government laboratories, computer-related professions, university and secondary school teaching, planetariums, museums, observatories, and others.
