The Bachelor of Science in Biology is a liberal arts degree with a concentration in the biological sciences.
While not a pre-professional degree, a major in biology is valuable because of the important role that biology plays in our everyday lives. An understanding of basic biological principles is crucial in interpreting the implications of environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity, the impact of genetic engineering and biotechnology in crop improvement, the treatment of disease, forensic medicine, and legal and ethical issues associated with the above.
Graduates are provided with an excellent background for a variety of careers and advanced training. Many go into medicine, law, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, optometry, and academia. Numerous career opportunities can be found in government, business, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, environmental survey/control, and other industries such as journalism, broadcasting, and public policy.
Students majoring in Biology can now enroll in the Marine Biology Area-of-Emphasis. This program provides a strong foundation for graduate studies or employment in Marine Biology and related fields. The program is wholly contained within the Biology major – no extra coursework is required.
Students majoring in biology also have the option of adding a neuroscience Area-of-Emphasis. The Neuroscience division of the Office of Research aims to increase collaborative opportunities and enhance the quality and visibility of neuroscience training and research at UGA, while providing support to the community of UGA scientists collectively working in the field.
