Film is among the newest of the arts, and its development reflects the changes in the modern and contemporary world. The major in Film Studies at UGA involves the interpretation, film theory, criticism, and historical context of cinema's economic, cultural, and technological development. It is not a film production degree; students interested in filmmaking should pursue a dual degree with Grady College's Telecommunications major.
The curriculum concentrates on the history and theory of film as an art form, exploring the medium through courses in several fields including comparative literature, English, Romance languages, and Germanic and Slavic languages. Additional courses are available that deal with acting, directing, and writing for the camera.
Graduates are prepared to pursue Film Studies in graduate school, to move into new digital media, help critique and generate the images and sounds that shape our culture, or combine other areas of interest, such as education, with cinema studies in their future careers.
