The history and promise of every organism is written into its DNA. The Department of Genetics at the University of Georgia provides an outstanding academic and research environment for students to understand the full spectrum of molecular, evolutionary, and population genetics.
Students take introductory courses in genetics, evolutionary biology, math, inorganic & organic chemistry, and biochemistry, and may choose from a variety of upper level courses in cellular biology, microbiology, plant breeding, and others. Laboratory courses focus on molecular genetics, evolutionary genetics, and genomics.
The Department strongly encourages student research, a distinctive feature of UGA's program that gives applicants to graduate or medical school a decided edge (roughly 90% of Genetics undergraduates pursue advanced degrees with previous student placements at Harvard, MIT, Johns Hopkins, Duke, University of California Berkeley, Yale, etc.). Students perform cutting-edge projects in a faculty member's lab which consolidates undergraduate genetics training into a single keystone experience.
Another important feature of the undergraduate major is that every student has a faculty mentor who meets with the student individually each semester to discuss course selection and career goals. Careers are available in biomedical-related fields, teaching, academic research, and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
