Landscape architecture is the analysis, planning, design, and management of the natural and built environment: parks, playgrounds, residential developments, campuses, shopping centers, gardens, golf courses, and many more. Landscape architects enhance quality of life by adding beauty but are also problem solvers who analyze environmental impact, plan for pedestrian and automobile trafï¬c, and determine the best use of each site.
The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture at UGA is a professional degree from one of the top-ranked programs in the nation. Course work combines creativity, art, science, engineering, and responsibility across several areas of study including design, historic preservation, planning, grading and drainage, horticulture, ecology, and sustainability. A required internship, service learning opportunities, design charrettes, and study abroad trips supplement student learning with real-world experience to build the most current knowledge and technical skills.
Career opportunities are available in a variety of areas including urban design, city planning, environmental planning, historic preservation, and recreation. Private and public agencies with large amounts of land regularly employ landscape architects (e.g. Disney, the National Park Service, Parks & Recreation departments, botanical gardens, universities, etc.). Graduates often pursue further study, and/or certification with the state of Georgia after 18 months of professional practice.
