The dual Math program at UGA combines the requirements for both the B.S. in Mathematics from the College of Arts and Sciences and B.S.Ed. in Mathematics Education from the College of Education into one program.
The curriculum emphasizes a blend of mathematical, technological, and professional studies courses paired with secondary school education field experience; students spend time in local schools during each semester of the program to progress toward a semester of student teaching. Courses include linear algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, problem solving, calculus, teaching, special problems in math education, and others.
Undergraduate research is encouraged and available through the Vertical Integration of Research and Education (VIGRE) and the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO). An active Math Club further supplements student learning and opportunity.
Graduates must earn passing scores on Georgia certification tests in secondary mathematics in order to be recommended for teacher certification in the state of Georgia. Other vocational opportunities include careers in actuarial sciences, computer modeling and applications, and optimization and control theory; academic positions in high schools and colleges; or further professional schooling in law, business, or medicine.
