The Mathematics Education major at the University of Georgia equips students to teach mathematics to grades 6-12, a responsibility which stresses the identification and development of mathematical potential at every level.
The major is selective, admitting only 25 students per semester. The curriculum emphasizes a blend of mathematical, technological and professional studies paired with secondary school education field experience; students spend time in local schools during each semester of the program to progress toward a semester of student teaching. Available courses include linear algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, problem solving, calculus, teaching mathematics, special problems in math education, and others.
Graduates must earn passing scores on Georgia certification tests in secondary mathematics in order to be recommended for teacher certification in the state of Georgia.
