The Microbiology major at UGA-Athens and UGA-Griffin campuses broadly trains students in biological, chemical, and physical sciences for a career studying microscopic organisms. Courses include general microbiology, pathogenic microbiology, medical mycology, microbial genetics, industrial microbiology, host-microbe interactions, and others. A guided laboratory experience supplements student learning.
Although not required, students are highly encouraged to conduct undergraduate research. The Microbiology Department and its professors offer multiple opportunities to this end with projects ranging from biofuels and biotechnology, to nucleic acid and protein sequence analysis, to cell biology and genomic stability.
Graduates pursue careers in the health sciences (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, public health), veterinary medicine, and entry-level technical and lab positions in a variety of settings including university, hospital, government, biotechnology, and other industries. The Microbiology major also prepares for graduate school in a number of related disciplines including Biochemistry, Genetics, Ecology, or Molecular Biology.
