Physics is the study of how the universe works: the study of matter, its motion through space and time, energy, and force.
The Physics major at the University of Georgia offers a curriculum that provides a thorough grounding in physics fundamentals. Courses such as modern physics, optics, electricity & magnetism, biophysics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and others emphasize problem-solving, conceptual reasoning, and quantitative modeling in generally small class sizes. Students are encouraged to pursue experimental, theoretical, or simulational research utilizing UGA's molecular and electron beams, condensed matter laser, atomic force microscope, laser-heated crystal growth facility, and spectroscopy laboratories.
Physicists can work effectively in any career which utilizes critical, logical, and systematic thinking skills. Students find employment in private or government research laboratories, universities, computer-related professions, and nuclear fields. The degree is excellent preparation for graduate school.
