Spanish is the official language of 20 countries and spoken as a primary language by over 470 million people. The United States alone contains over 50 million total speakers and is the second largest Spanish-speaking country in the world after Mexico.
Students majoring in Spanish through the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Georgia take courses that combine the study of language, literature, culture, and linguistics, leading to a development of language proficiency and an understanding of the Spanish-speaking world. Students are encouraged to participate in an accredited study abroad program for an academic year, semester, or the summer.
Many students majoring in Spanish become teachers or go on to graduate school, but proficiency in a foreign language also helps majors find employment in the public and private sectors.
