The Special Education major at UGA prepares teachers for certification in three different special education areas depending on their career interest:
The Adapted/Autism emphasis prepares for instruction of pre-K through grade 12 students with severe disabilities. The curriculum builds critical knowledge and skills in adapted special education. Students receive comprehensive practicum experience in elementary, middle school, and high school grade levels, culminating in a student teaching placement in the level of their choice.
The General emphasis prepares for instruction of mild disability pre-K through grade 12 students. This emphasis is offered fully online or at the UGA Griffin location. The curriculum builds critical knowledge and skills in general special education. Students receive comprehensive practicum experience in elementary, middle school, and high school grade levels, culminating in a student teaching placement of their choice.
The Birth through kindergarten emphasis prepares teachers to work with birth through kindergarten-age children with and without disabilities. The curriculum promotes developmentally appropriate inclusive and collaborative teaching practices with engaging instruction and support to young children and their families. Field placements in classes with infants/toddlers, preschoolers, pre-k, and kindergarten are provided. Graduates are recommended to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission for a renewable teaching certificate in birth through kindergarten and preschool special education.
